Endurance Rallying - what it's all about

It’s new and unlike anything else. You don’t need several cheque books to be successful, and it offers competitors the most competitive form of rallying in Britain for one simple reason: conventional special stage rallying means only an elite few at the front have the money to be at the front. In road rallying, you are limited to 30 mph, and to win, you need a co-driver with the mental stamina of Einstein.

Now, in between these two disciplines, has come a totally new low-cost rallying formula.

You need: A petrol engine no bigger than 1400cc or a diesel up to 1950cc, no turbos. No tuning – you can not tune the engine. Gearboxes, transmissions, b rakes, all rely on standard showroom-standard components. Seats can be changed, and suspension uprated. You need to strengthen the bodyshell, fit a sumpshield, and fit minimal safety equipment. You are set faster standards than road rallying, but not as fast as Special Stage Rallying (restricted in the UK to 60 mph averages in the forests – even if you have an Evo with hundreds of horsepower, that is all you are allowed to average).

Endurance Rally is the ultimate clubman’s rallying formula as it means the majority of competitors are on the same performance level, instead of a minority who do all the winning. It is drastically more cost effective.

There are other shorter weekend club events under review by several motor-clubs, the best example having been set by the pioneering initiative of Amman and District Motor Club who run the Welsh Endurance Rally (the next event is set for the weekend of July 18, call Hywel Thomas on 01639 642389 for more).

The new concept that has taken the British Rally scene by storm with more than 100 cars attracted to the first Lombard Revival Rally springs from the successful World Cup Rallies, which have twice rallied the Sahara in edition to a London to Athens through Yugolslavia and Albania.
