15:00  - Blackpool
Mike Biss and Cath Woodman are in a very happy mood after getting their half-timbered (wooden engine mount) Corsa to the finish in a good place after expecting retirement earlier in the event.

As the Turner Rovers arrive together Jamie said that both cars had run without attention for the whole event so both Owen and Jamie had spent the all their spare moments helping other crews.

Andrew Duerden, with Paul Merryweather in the MG ZR, was full of praise for the Colway tyres having survived the whole rally without a puncture and also declares Lowther 2 and Greystoke as the best Lombard sections he has ever done.

13:30  - Lowther Park
First car through Lowther this morning was Jamie Turner who duly set the fastest time. Further down the list others were not so lucky. Tony and Fay Campey stalled on the first lap hairpin and the car totally refused to restart. Andy Glossop had a hairy moment with an “off” on a tight right after a cattle grid where they were lucky not to roll and escaped with the loss of some bits of trim and a few seconds. Several other cars also went off on this corner – happily they all avoided the stout oak trees.

This rally does exactly what it says on the tin.
Iain Freestone - Peugeot 205
Neil Wilson and Tony Davies were visibly suffering from their event long problem of failing shock absorbers on the Puma. The shocks were so bad on Lowther 3 that the bouncy-castle Puma was pitched off into the clag for a while.

23:00  - The Evening News
As crews arrive back in Carlisle at the end of the Scottish leg of the Lombard Rally they are recalling todays adventures.

Matt Fowle had a very lucky escape tonight when a drive shaft broke just after the finish of the last selectif. As one of those carrying no spares or tools he was fortunate indeed when Duncan Williams & Nick Darkin breezed past offering a spare shaft, tools and a torch. Matt and Mark made it to the Carlisle control without losing any time.

Andy Glossop and Chris Taylor comment “That’s Rallying….” when, “… after a good day office...” and “…awsome runs in Glengap, Kinharvie and Ae 2...” they collected a maximum in Greskine, the last selectif of the day, after hitting some rocks the size of “…loafs of bread…” their gearbox jammed in 2nd and a tyre punctured.

Chris Day & Simon Wheatcroft in their Mk2 Mini Cooper thought their rally was over when they went a long… long…. way off on Changue 1. A bystander commented that perhaps he should fetch his little-old tractor and a few minutes later returned with a brand-new-monster-tractor about the size of a house. Within a few minutes the Mini was back on track and able to continue.

Farty the Wonder Jack – After another crew stopped to shw them how to operate their hi-tech air-bag jack Birkill & Harris jacked the Vauxhall Corsa so fast to change two same-side punctures that they were worried the car would topple over.

Robert Evett & Richard Wise - Vauxhall Nova - 7th at Leg 3 lunch
Top Ten contenders Robert Evett and Richard Wise were another puncture victim this afternoon. Three punctures and only two spares lost them time until rescued by the loan of a spare from Garry Preston & Mike Sones.

Owen Turner in about 5th overall complains on arrival at the end of Leg 3… “The guys in front of me are going far too fast….. and I don’t know how they do it.”

Carl Hawkins and Iain Tullie had a relatively trouble free run after the gearbox woes of yesterday. “Cracking forests…… We survived a big spin on Glengap trying to close the gap on Jamie but we’re only taking a few seconds here and there. …..We’ll still be trying tomorrow”. They also send a big thank you to all the marshals in the rain today.

The Turners lend a hand to fix the Fowle/Appleton sump guard at Lunch today.

17:30  - Saturday Snippets
The Turner brothers are both relaxed at lunch with little work to do on their own cars so they have been busy helping to make repairs to the sump guard on Matt Fowle’s Peugeot. First reports from the results team suggest that Jamie is still leading even though he lost time with a puncture in Ae forest.

Gary Edgington was described as looking like a swamp monster – covered from head to toe in mud and oil - at the lunch halt as he and Jane got stuck in to stripping the gearbox on their Peugeot. Jane impressed the breakdown crews by asking to borrow a trolley jack before picking it up and running back to the stricken Peugeot.

Although he had a generous three spares available John Buffum is out of the running after collecting his fourth flat of the day. John's problem is put down to bent wheels not allowing the tyres to seal rather than simple punctures.

Top mechanic Andy Inskip reports that the breakdown crews are desperatlely low on spare parts having never before coped with so many running repairs.

Brilliant Rally - we hope to be invited back.
Karl and Frank O'Donoghue
After retiring with a broken engine mount & driveshaft.
Owen Turner & Andrew Dadswell comment at Dundeugh Hill “We're having too much fun.. “.

Richard and Jon Sandilands tried to drive out of a selectif on a puncture and had to be pulled from a ditch.

Mike Biss and Cath Woodman have given up their quest for an engine mount and are now continuing with their engine restrained by heavy duty ty-wraps.

Worth Birkill gave up smoking at the start of the event. Co-driver David Harris says his new faster-than-ever driver is now scaring him and wonders if he should encourage Worth to resume his smoking habit.

Christine Gray was in trouble with Nigel who missed his breakfast this morning after Cristine changed their clocks a day early. They arrived at the morning restart with three minutes to spare.

Jamie Turner has suffered a puncture in Ae Forest and the hard charging Hawkins and Tullie may have taken over the lead after replacing their broken gearbox last night - a job they completed in 45 minutes following the previous box removal when they removed the broken 2nd gear.

Fourth at lunch on Leg 3 - the 106 of Don Whitehurst & Terry Atherton on Dundeugh Hill
Richards - White and Scott hit a large rock in Dundeugh Hill Forest from where there are reports of at least five cars off the road. This test used some unused and almost invisible tracks over the top of the hill where the first crews had to find the way through small pine saplings that sprang back after they passed making the path-finding almost as tricky for following cars. One crew arrived at the selectif finish declaring it “The best test I’ve ever done…”

Don Whitehurst and Terry Atherton lost their exhaust, again, and have now had it welded solid by the Tony Fowkes travelling welding shop.

Alan Pettit and Dylan Jenkins continued on what they thought was a puncture only to find they had three flats on arrival at the test finish.

Simon Banham and James Savage arrived at Carlisle on a flat battery and did not dare stop for fuel. They fitted a new battery this morning hoping they could reach a fuel station. On seeing them in Dundeugh Hill we must assume the wish was granted.

Both Stuart Cariss & Linda Cariss in the Mk1 Escort and Rich Welsh & Jack Windaybank in a Peugeot 106 reckon that modern alternators are not much use having replaced several units.

After a brief stop to help another crew John Stephens & Paul Stephens had the bonnet come up and smash the screen on their Suzuki.

Andy Actman has arrived at lunch desperately looking for more 14 inch tyres after splitting two this morning. In this part of Scotland he has been unable to find anywhere open with tyres to sell.

09:30  - Tales from the woods
Kielder stories are are still making a talking point. Typical is that from Phil Stroud and Rick Hands – Vauxhall Corsa – who had three punctures and only two spares having to drive out on three wheels and wrecking a wheel and ripping out a brake hose. After limping to Carlisle they made repairs but the 1hr 30mins penalty dropped them from 18th to 91st – they are grateful for the work done by the rally service teams that has kept them in the event.

08:00  - The old shoelace trick.
Duncan Williams and Nick Darkin – Peugeot 106 – had to become inventive in Warcop yesterday. When the throttle cable broke mid stage they used their shoes laces tied together to operate the throttle thru’ the window to drive out of the test, losing 4 minutes. Matt Fowle came to the rescue supplying a spare. They were yet another car to lose time in a Kielder ditch taking a maximum so they spent more time helping to rescue others. After the car cried enough outside last night’s hotel the service boys thankfully cured the problem with a spare crank sensor.

07:40  - Better than work.
As daylight comes up and the weather is closer to what everyone expected - grey skies and driving rain - student, Matt Heal reckons the early start for a long day in Scotland still beats being in lectures. The Heals, Paul & Matt, were another of those crews to lose time in Kielder where they suffered two punctures. They start Leg three in 14th place.

07:30  - As Leg 3 to Scotland begins
Visibly one of the quickest cars on Warcop, the Vauxhall Nova of Doug Brown and Mick Briggs ran into a few problems on Leg 2. In Slaney Wood they hit a gate post on only the second junction. This broke the spotlights and damaged the steering. On Kielder they went off into a ditch near the finish which cost 3 to 4 minutes. After escaping Kielder they found a rear puncture and changed the wheel. “We’re hoping for a better day in Scotland…”

Leading after Leg 2 - Jamie Turner and Graham Dance - Rover 200

02:30  - Kielder Bites
One crew to suffer the perils of Kielder is the MG ZR of Martin Clark and Bob Rutherford who were in fifth place at Brough and had a brilliant run through Hamsterley. The good news is that the car is virtually undamaged. The bad news is that Martin and Bob had to spend four hours in the woods together before a 4x4 big enough to pull them back on the road came to their rescue. There have been many other stories of Kielder offs and an equal number of tails from crews who stopped to pull stranded cars back on the road. There’s a excellent spirit between crews in Endurance Rallying.

Saturday - 00:43  - After Midnight
As the weary but happy crews arrive in Carlisle at the end of a very long day that started in Scarborough nearly eighteen hours ago Rory McNeile and Pete Hopkins are typical saying “Brilliant, Brilliant Day… Glad to be in the forests proper…. Dalby was a great start to the day that just got better…” Pete & Rory swapped roles for the second run through Duncombe Park and Pete beat Rory’s time by 11 seconds. Who said navigators can’t drive?

23:30  - Leg 2 Top Five at Brough

20:40  - Rolling Along
Adam Wiseberg and Peter Blackett – Renault Clio had a small problem yesterday when a wheel cylinder failed. Today they had a bigger problem when they rolled the car in Stang damaging the front suspension and steering. They have limped out of the Selectif and rejoined the in Hamsterley after making repairs.

20:30  - First or Foliage
Starting Friday in 12th place, Martin Kernahan and Bill Hitchcock – MG ZR, were continuing their “First or Foliage” quest when “an excess of speed over talent” resulted in a big off at McRae corner in Dalby (where Colin’s Subaru went off big time in 1998) plunging the ZR 75 feet down the hillside. The rescue required the pulling power of four 4-wheel drives working in tandem. After a quick check they continued but in Boltby the car “no longer felt quite right”. Following a lunch-time rebuild involving a large amount of duct-tape and hammer work the over-stressed car finally cried enough in Stang 2 when the front suspension collapsed. Martin and Bill have now limped to Carlisle and retired handing victory to foliage but already planning next years entry.

17:45  - No Second Gear for Second Car
Carl Hawkings and Iain Tullie who were in second place this morning and pressing hard to take the top spot appear to be in trouble having lost second gear in their Corsa. Carl stripped down the gear at the Catterick lunch halt but was unable to make repairs so they are limping on after replacing the old unit and hoping to locate and fit a replacement this evening.

17:30  - John Hopwood
The rally world will be saddened to hear of the death of lynch pin of Ecurie Cod Fillet, John Hopwood, who died this afternoon.

Andy Glossop and Chris Taylor in the Puma on Warcop.

17:25  - Hyrolastic Repairs
Still going well are Simon Bradley and Roger Adderley in the ex-Turner Metro even though they burst a suspension unit this morning. They manage to find and fit a scrap yard replacement unit using the hydrolastic suspension pressure pump that they just happened to be carrying in the car.

17:15  - Sirion notes
Andy Actman, with Catriona Rings, is finding his new model Daihatsu Sirion a little heavier and not quite as quick as his earlier car. Another Sirion crew, John and Gill Cotton, are thought to be out of the running. After singing the praises of his new car at the lunch halt the Cotton’s were soon in trouble when a rear wheel came off after a bad bump at the top of a hill in Warcop. The wheel rolled all the way down the hill and a disconsolate John was last seen walking to fetch the errant wheel. Could is be the same fault that put Andy Actman out of a World Cup rally in Tunisia a few years back?

17:10  - Turner Trouble
Jamie Turner is making use of a valuable few minutes service time at the Catterick lunch halt to replace the bumper and fit new lights to the front of his Rover 200 after an off in Dalby this morning. When interview by Tony Mason he replied that he didn’t fancy taking on Kielder later today without decent lights.

17:00  - Borrowed Wheels
Don Whitehurst and Terry Atherton, Peugeot 106, are really enjoying their day in the Forests. Don is driving a car that he sold after the 2004 Lombard Rally having borrowed it from the new owner for this event. The bug has bitten Don again and he is making plans to buy another car for future Endurance events.

13:00  - Friday Frolics
As the rally moves towards the Lunch halt at Catterick Race course after tackleing Oliver's Mount then the first serious forest test in Dalby and several further Selectifs the Polo of Martin Flight Martin & Paul Lewis has appeared with a broken side window said to have been caused after they recovered their lost exhaust only to have it assault the window when they went around the next corner. Andy Inskip was recently seen making further exhaust and window repairs to the Polo at Duncombe Park in Helmsley.
Motorsport News rallies editor, James Atwood, had a slight off in Boltby where the slippery conditions required they help of several strong spectators to lift the car back on the road.
Mike Biss has survived Dalby with his wooden engine mounts and is hoping to have new parts catch up with him in Carlisle provided he can nurse the car though Kielder this afternoon.
Enjoying the day is father and daughter pairing of Malcolm & Caroline Grubb in a Vauxhall Nova although Caroline is having a little trouble guiding dad through the tricky Selectif sections.

10:00  - Friday and the rain begins
After an early dry run over Olivers Mount the rain is starting to fall for cars entering the Dalby forest and onwards towards a very tight and slippery test at Duncombe Park in Helmsley.

Friday - 01:30  - It's All Worthwhile
Happy with their first days run are Simon Bradley and Roger Adderley. Aiming to press on from the word go they got lost just 200 metres from the start of the first Selectif so they’re well chuffed to be in third spot after all the effort of re-shelling last years winning (ex Jamie Turner) Metro and completing the job the day before the start. They are now looking forward to the forests! .

John Haugland and Richard Pashley on a navigation section this evening

23:45  - Service Teams Save the Day
Even making it across the start line was an achievement for Paul Cunningham and Ian Perry whose Citroen AX broke it's gearbox on the outskirts of York on the way to the start. But a replacement box was located and stirling work by the Banham and Inskip mechanical crews had the car running again in time for the off. This was not the end of their problems as they claim a kerb jumped out and hit them while they were coping with fused lights and a sticking throttle. This bump broke a wheel and bent the rear axle. Once more the Banhams were there at the rescue – Crash Bang Wallop and the axle was magically straight again. The fused lights then developed into an electrical fire with smoke and ominous crackling. After all this Paul & Ian reached Scarborough just two minutes late happy to be in 39th place.

23:30  - Early Problems
We hear that the Corsa of Mike Biss has a fractured engine mounting and that the engine is now supported by a block of wood wedged in the sump guard.
Various crews report catching slower cars on some of the tests but the overall approach seems to be one of caution with such a long event ahead over the next three days .

18:30  - Taking it Gently
The slippy conditions are already catching crews out. Rob Navin and Ian Varney in their Micra report an off on the first test but were soon pulled back on and offer their thanks to Steve and Mal. Another unnamed crew report "What a slippery start…. It's gonna be a real challenge"

John & Ross O'Brien are flagged away from the York start by Miss Yorkshire.

Thursday - 18:00  - The Flag Drops
It's a cool and windy, but thankfully dry, evening as Miss Yorkshire flags off car number one the Peugeot 106 of John & Ross O'Brien, the first of 120 cars, from the Elvington Air Museum this afternoon at the start of the 2006 Lombard Rally. Early reports are coming in that the Selectifs are very slippery after heavy rain over the previous 24 hours and the cars on the road appear to be tacking things carefully in the early tests.
