The Great Arc - A rally to test man and machine

Can you drive in a straight line from the tip of India to the Himalayas? Are you ingenious enough to overcome natural obstacles? Are you determined enough to take the hard decision when the going gets tough? Are you a pioneer when others just follow? If you can answer yes to these questions, then The Great Arc is the right event for you. It’s your chance to follow in the footsteps of George Everest and William Lambton, the great pioneers of the survey of India.

The Great Arc rally aims to take up the spirit of the Survey by asking competitors to drive in as straight a line as possible from the tip of India at Cape Comorin to Hyderabad - known as the Lambton route.

For two weeks you will be battling the elements to find the straightest route possible between the various night stops that we will set up. Some will be in exotic hotels and others will be in villages in the middle of nowhere. We will set up camps on or near the line of the Great Arc to give you the best possible chance of creating a straight line.

We will give you a default route and mileage which you can follow and enjoy or you can go off-road and cut a straighter route between the night stops. For this you will need determination, stamina and a hefty dose of luck - and this is the real challenge. Quite simply the straightest line will win as long as you can complete the daily journey within the time limit without breaking any speed limits and obeying the laws of India. Any delays and you pick up penalty points. And points don’t mean prizes.

Route on GPS

Your default line will be on a GPS which will mainly follow roads but you will have the luxury of going off-piste and using your ingenuity, specialist knowledge and imagination to shorten our route.

With calculations and equations nearly as complicated as the survey itself we will be monitoring the progress of the competitors on a daily basis.
