From Ngorongoro

LOOK, it’s been a mighty impressive day, let’s just leave it at that. Time for a cool shower and an early night. We are at the Ngorongoro Crater, which is miles wide, with a large lake in the centre, green, perfect, with the most fantastic sunset, and all sorts of animals are down there munching. The view from the rim, here at the Serena Lodge, is breathtaking, but you have heard all that before - this, though, really is the best so far.
We lunched, with a view almost as perfect, by The Manyara lake with a million squillion pink flamingoes, with everyone tucking into a lunchbox, when, blow me, six large Heffalumps came lumbering along, raking the grass with their tasks, like they do when hungry. A few hard stares were exchanged, from either side, and both parties continued with their foraging as if this sort of thing happens every day…you don’t get a view like this from the Pizza Hut at the Trafalgar Square end of the The Strand, and certainly justifies the whole effort of getting to this remote spot.
Cars! Tell us about the cars, you say. Nope, we left them all behind, and hitched onto a fleet of green Toyota Landcruisers. Well, the Bentley mob opted for the one and only Land Rover, but, being the Bentley mob, they would, wouldn’t they.
Sorry, the ice in the Pimms is melting, and Pith Helmet wants me to try it with a slug of ginger pop. Must dash…. more adventures from the rim where time began , the world’s biggest volcano crater, providing we survive the hangover to get up early enough to see the hippos. And, presumably, more heffalumps.
